Product costs
Product costs (in Brand & data management) is where contribution margin gets its cost side. Kreel computes margin from current unit costs, not the cost at the time of sale - editing a cost here restates margin across every past window it’s read for, not just going forward. Margin is always net of tax and shipping, independent of the brand’s revenue basis setting.
Cost precedence
Section titled “Cost precedence”For each product variant, Kreel resolves a unit cost in this order:
- Manual variant override - set here, for that exact variant.
- Manual product override - set here, applied to every variant of that product that has no variant-level override.
- Shopify’s own
inventoryItem.unitCost- pulled in automatically when Shopify is connected with inventory access. - Uncovered - no cost found anywhere. Kreel never assumes a missing cost is zero; it’s reported as uncovered instead.
Overrides are entered in each store’s native currency, matching the Shopify column next to it.
Editing costs
Section titled “Editing costs”The page lists every variant with its Shopify cost (if any), a product-level override field, a variant-level override field, and the resulting effective cost plus its source.
Enter a value in either override column and click Save costs. Clear a field back to blank to remove that override and fall back to the next level of precedence. Only workspace owners and admins can edit; other roles see the table read-only.
If a store is missing inventory access, its rows show a prompt to reconnect Shopify with the broader scope so its costs can import automatically.
Coverage
Section titled “Coverage”Two coverage figures sit above the table:
- Catalog coverage - the share of the product catalog that has a resolved cost from any source.
- Trailing 90-day revenue coverage - the share of the last 90 days’ revenue that comes from products with a resolved cost.
Margin is only reported at 80% or higher revenue coverage for the window being asked about; below that, Kreel reports the coverage figure instead of a margin number, so a thin catalog can’t produce a misleadingly precise-looking figure. Even a reported margin can still omit uncovered products - always read the coverage figure alongside the margin amount, not instead of it.
Fulfillment cost
Section titled “Fulfillment cost”A single flat fulfillment cost per order, applied only to blended contribution margin (not per-product margin), is configured on the Brand settings page next to Revenue basis - not here. Contribution margin always excludes tax and shipping regardless of that setting.
